Godfrey Ho

Godfrey Ho is a former Hong Kong-based film director.

He is best known for his ''Ninja'' films, a series of 1980s martial arts films made with a technique. Ho would film footage for one film, and then edit and splice the shots together in a different order, often adding in footage from other films, and then over the result to create an coherent finished product. This allowed him to create four or five films with the budget of one, though it is often difficult to discern how much of the finished product he actually filmed himself. Ho has directed over 90 films, of which approximately 40 contain the word "ninja" in the title.

Background

Reliable biographical information on Ho is difficult to come by, due to his obscurity and his recent relative inactivity . The problem is further exacerbated by his frequent use of pseudonyms. He has been credited under more than 20 different names during the course of his career, although his motives for doing this are unclear. Interestingly, neither Godfrey Ho nor any of his other pseudonyms are his real birth name, which, according to the , is Chi Kueng Ho .

Ho's pseudonyms include Godfrey Hall, Zhi Jiang He, Benny Ho, Chi-Mou Ho, Chun-Sing Ho, Charles Lee, Stanley Chan, George King, Ho Jeung Keung, Fong Ho, and others. In the -speaking world, Ho is usually credited by his real name.

Career

A notable feature of many of Godfrey Ho's films was the presence of the B-actor in a lead role. Harrison, a reasonably well-known American B-movie actor in the 1960s and 1970s, agreed to act in several of Ho's films in the early 1980s, although this footage was later spliced into many more of Ho's films without Harrison's knowledge. Harrison has stated that the damage done to his acting career by this association with Ho's films led him to retire in 1990.

Many of Ho's movies are revered by aficionados of bad movies as being among some of the most unintentionally hilarious movies ever created, featuring, among other things, Benny Hill-esque car chases run on sped-up film, ninjas, and superfluous rape scenes which often have little or no connection with the already disjointed plot. Ho is also noteworthy for his uncredited use of music from ''Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan'', ''Star Wars'', Wendy Carlos, ''Miami Vice'', Iczer One, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Steve Hillage among others, as background music in his films.

Latest information

Godfrey Ho now teaches digital movie-making in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Film Academy.

Yen was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, the son of martial arts master Bow Sim Mark and Klysler, a newspaper editor. He was raised in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. His younger sister Chris Yen is also an accomplished martial artist and rising actress, recently appearing in the independent film ''Adventures of Johnny Tao: Rock Around the Dragon''.

From a young age, Yen was interested in martial arts of all kinds, experimenting with various styles, from Taekwondo to . After dropping out of school, Yen decided to stick with Wushu, moved to Beijing to train further with the Beijing Wushu Team. During his training in China, his instructor Mr. Lee demanded Donnie cut his hippie-style mullet as it was inappropriate. When he wanted to return to the United States, he made a side trip to Hong Kong and it was there that he met Yuen Woo-ping, a famous Hong Kong fight choreographer.

Career

Yen's first film role was at age 21 in 1984 in the film ''Xiao Tai Ji''. The film revolved around , and although not a critical success, the film helped Yen to achieve further notability. Over the years, Donnie would send martial arts magazines and books from North America back to Mr. Lee in China. Sometime after filming Drunken Tai Chi and Tiger Cage, Donnie had cosmetic surgery to give him folded eyelids and to straighten his teeth. The changes are very apparent in subsequent films.

However, Yen gained his breakthrough role in 1992 as General Lan in ''Once Upon a Time in China II''. His final fight against Wong Fei-Hung remains one of the most celebrated fights in martial arts films to this day. This fight scene could be considered one of the very best in martial arts films, and has been revisited to an extent in 2002's '''', where Yen and Li face off again. He later co-starred in ''Shanghai Knights'' starring fellow Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan. The role of Wu Chow in ''Shanghai Knights'' was originally offered to his on-screen ''Tiger Cage 2'' nemesis, Robin Shou, but due to scheduling conflicts, he had to turn it down and it eventually went to Yen.

Donnie was briefly engaged to ATV actress, Man Yee Man, before marrying in 2003 in Toronto to Cissy Wang, 2000, with whom he has a daughter, Jasmine. Donnie also has a son from a previous marriage named Man Cheuk Yen. Yen choreographed most of the fighting animation in the 2004 videogame ''Onimusha 3'' .

Yen has been very active in Hong Kong cinema as of late and can be seen as Chu Zhaonan in Tsui Hark's wuxia epic ''Seven Swords'', and opposite Sammo Hung and Simon Yam in the brutal crime drama ''''. Both films were featured in 2006 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Also in 2006, he starred as Wong Xiao-Long in ''Dragon Tiger Gate'', an adaptation of a popular Chinese comic book, together with Nicholas Tse and Shawn Yue.

Donnie also worked on '''', starring Alex Pettyfer, serving as .

In 2007, Yen starred in '''', which he produced and served as fight choreographer. The film earned him awards for Best Action Choreography at the and the Hong Kong Film Awards.

His next film, '''', is a semi-biographical account of Yip Man, a famous Wing Chun master and teacher to Bruce Lee. ''Ip Man'' will mark a fourth collaboration with director Wilson Yip, reuniting them with co-star Simon Yam and Sammo Hung who will make a cameo appearance and serve as fight choreographer.

Corey Yuen

Corey Yuen Kwai is a Hong Kong actor, film director and producer. He is one of the Seven Little Fortunes.

Corey was one of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao's best friends during their days in the ''China Drama Academy'' Peking Opera School. In 1985, he was the first Hong Kong director to successfully bring Hong Kong style action to an American film with ''No Retreat, No Surrender'' with the soon to be famous actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. Corey Yuen has worked with most of Hong Kong's top stars at one time or another, and began Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock's career in 1985 with ''Yes! Madam'' and boosting Stephen Chow's with 1990s ''All for the Winner'' and 1991's ''Top Bet''. He has also directed Jackie Chan with Sammo Hung in ''Dragons Forever'', and directed Anita Mui, Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok in ''Saviour of the Soul''. In 1993 he began an alliance and friendship with action star Jet Li. The two have worked together for more than 8 years and Corey has brought his brand of action in Jet Li's 3 American films, ''Lethal Weapon 4'', ''Romeo Must Die'', '''', and ''Cradle 2 the Grave''. Corey also directed ''The Transporter'' and ''So Close'', released in late 2002. Corey opted not to return to direct the sequel ''Transporter 2'', released in 2005. However, his team of stuntmen and martial artists are featured in the film.

His other notable films include ''Righting Wrongs'' with Yuen Biao and Cynthia Rothrock, ''She Shoots Straight'' with Joyce Godenzi, Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah and 1997's '''' starring Yuen Biao and Takeshi Kaneshiro. He has also been an action director on a number of other films. His style of action is not as distinct as that of other Hong Kong action directors like Yuen Woo Ping and Ching Siu Tung, but is noted for its speed and creativity. He is also distinguished in his ability to mix hand-to-hand combat and gunfighting, two styles of fighting that are not often used together successfully in Hong Kong action films.
